The day started off with a nice bait ball where we released a nice (for the far south coast) black of around 130kg and four striped marlin, things were looking good!  The day continued on with high hopes as we disappeared from the main group of boats and we continued on racking up the numbers! Sitting with 5 fish for the day at 4pm we elected to keep fishing then disaster – we missed our first (and only) fish for the day on the switch, never mind – continue on regardless!
The afternoon was something special – we found the holy grail racking up 5 more fish in just a touch over an hour to see us making tracks home at nearly 8pm. Ending up with a total of 9 striped marlin and 1 black marlin – a day that will be remembered! (and a nice record for us to try and beat)

Well worth it to say the least! We had some of the most awesome surface action I’ve ever seen with multiple fish on balls and some of the best bites you will ever see in your life right at the back of the boat. The bite here at Bermagui has been excellent all week with plenty of boats getting multiple fish each day and we are only expecting it to get better as the month rolls on.

The strong southerly blow that made life hard for the Sydney to Hobart yachts did nothing but favours for us here with the current dropping off and nice clean water pushing in from out wide, the bait has turned up with plenty of nice patches of slimies around keeping those with the pointy noses about.

Yes, it is still early in marlin season however the last couple of days I’ve felt as confident as I would in mid February! Our client Warren tagged his first ever striped marlin onboard Head Hunter with us yesterday – a lovely fish that I was happy to call at 110kg any day of the week! A flighty fish it was to, giving us a great show on the teaser before we switched him and plenty of jumps right at the back of the boat in what could only be described as perfect conditions!

The fishing is only going to get better so get ready for what I think is going to be a great season!

Fishing out wide of late has been challenging due to the recent weather but for those who have braved the elements it has been rewarding with a few nice yellowfin tuna up to 40kg making an appearance from time to time along with some nice albacore also, the majority of these fish have been taken in skirted lures in the 6-10” range and on the ever reliable halco hard-bodys. As the weather improves I’d expect to see plenty more yellowfin caught and there’s a fairly good chance of an early season striped marlin!

The bait is starting to appear just inside the shelf and it’s starting to look really good for the upcoming marlin season, there has already been a couple seen and lost! We are all hoping for a great follow up from last years excellent marlin season, the game fishing here on the sapphire coast is unique and many of us don’t realise how lucky we are to have such a great fishery straight out the front of home. People travel far and wide to experience the great fishing we have here so don’t be afraid of getting out there and giving it ago!

In other news we are onto a few exciting new toys, Jason from Colorato Lures has sent me some new weapons for the season and I tell you what they look fantastic in and out of the water! It’s refreshing to see a lure that is genuinely different to the rest in looks, shape & design rather than the usual “they all look the same” approach. You can check them out Here. We fished Head Hunter on Saturday and had an excellent day, after a slow morning starting straight out the front of Bermagui chasing Albacore we were listening to a couple of boats on the radio up north at mourya canyons who were getting yellowfin we elected to head wider & north. We were rewarded with our decision and managed to find a nice patch of yellowfin tuna at 36°20 150°30 we kept one around the 20kg mark and released another, we were able to watch them chasing flying fish at theres nothing better than watching yellowfin jumping about trying to catch a feed for themselves. As the afternoon progressed we hooked into a nice one for young Andre, after nearly a two hour battle on 15kg line and fighting the fish into the dark the hook pulled with about 20meters to go. Safe to say we weren’t real happy but thats fishing! Although we certainly didn’t set any records on the amount of yellowfin caught in one day it certainly one I will remember for awhile. To be able to watch these awesome fish chasing flying fish around on the surface, having them jump through the spread of lures and all around the boat whilst your fighting fish is pretty special thats for sure.

The fishing is looking like improving over the next few weeks with good numbers of yellowfin & albacore being caught the whole way up to Sydney, plus the odd striped marlin about to the north. I’d only expect things to get better of the next few weeks!
